Man Hit in Atlanta While Refueling Car on Shoulder of I-285

ATLANTA, GA. – November 5, 2018 ( A man who ran out of gas in Atlanta, Georgia, and was refueling his car on the shoulder of Interstate 285 was struck and injured by a vehicle on November 5, 2018 according to an online news story from*

Around 1:30 a.m. on November 5, 2018 a 24-year-old man was refueling his car on the shoulder of I-285 South, near Cascade Road in Atlanta. A passing vehicle struck the man, causing him serious injury. The driver reportedly stayed at the scene and spoke to police. The man was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with critical injuries. He is reportedly stable at this time.  

Police were on the scene until approximately 4 a.m. The names of the driver and the victim have not been released. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the pedestrian accident and have not released additional details at this time. 

Atlanta is located in Fulton County and extends partially into DeKalb County, Georgia. Fulton County has a population estimated to be more than 1 million and has huge numbers of vehicle accidents every year. In 2016, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, nearly 61,000 vehicle accidents occurred in Fulton County. These vehicle accidents led to 12,875 injuries and 129 deaths. Forty-one of the people killed in the 2016 crashes were pedestrians. 

During the five-year period between 2012 and 2016, Fulton County had a major jump in vehicle collisions. In 2012, a total of 22,275 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 4,498 injuries and 77 deaths. Sixteen pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes that year. By 2015, the number of accidents had grown well above 50,000, with fatality accidents reaching above 100. Twenty-eight of the 2015 fatalities included pedestrians.
