I-75 Shut Down in Clayton County, GA, Due to Vehicle Crash

CLAYTON COUNTY, GA. – November 3, 2018 (11alive.com) According to an online news story from 11alive.com, Interstate 75 was shut down in Clayton County, Georgia, November 3 due to a vehicle crash in the southbound lanes.*

The crash occurred at approximately 5 a.m. on November 3, near I-75 South and Jonesboro Road (Ga. 54) in Clayton County. The Georgia Department of Transportation said several vehicles were involved, and at least one person was injured. It is not clear how the accident happened. All southbound traffic was halted to allow crews to investigate and clear the scene, and drivers were encouraged to use different routes. No additional information has been reported at this time. 

Clayton County is located in the north-central part of the state of Georgia. It has an estimated population of more than 285,000, and its major roadways include Interstate 75, Interstate 85, Interstate 285, and Interstate 675. 

Clayton County has seen a significant increase in vehicle accidents during the last several years, according to information compiled by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In 2012, the county was the site of 8,185 vehicle accidents. Those numbers rose in 2013 — 9,186 total accidents, 2,218 injuries, and 26 deaths — then fell again in 2014 — 8,989 total accidents, 2,199 injuries, and 21 deaths.

However, in 2015, accident totals and injuries saw a big jump. More than 11,000 vehicle accidents occurred in Clayton County in 2015, resulting in 2,717 injuries and 26 deaths. By 2016, accident numbers had risen to 13,688. The accidents in 2016 led to almost 3,500 injuries and nearly 50 deaths.
