Georgia Teen Seriously Injured in ‘Pumpkin Chucking’ Event at Church in Gainesville, Georgia

November 02, 2018

HALL COUNTY, GA. – November 2, 2018 (wsbtv.com) As reported online by wsbtv.com, a Georgia teenager was seriously injured on Halloween in a “pumpkin chucking” event at a Hall County church.*

On Halloween, 16-year-old Jacob Stevens was attending a youth group event called “Trunk of Treats” at the Corner Stone Assembly of God Church in Gainesville, Georgia. The event featured an activity called “pumpkin chucking,” in which kids launch pumpkins into the air using a giant slingshot-type contraption.

Stevens was participating in the pumpkin chucking and the launcher somehow back fired. The pumpkin loaded into the launcher slammed back into Stevens’ chest, and he was thrown to the ground. His heart stopped, and one of the youth group leaders began performing CPR until paramedics arrived. Stevens was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Stevens’ father, Michael Stevens, said the teenager is still in serious condition but has been showing some signs of recovery.

“We are getting a response out of him,” Michael Stevens said. “He gave us a thumbs up, and we know things are going to be fine. He looked at us and tried to raise up, and [the hospital staff] told him, ‘Just stay still.’ I got him by the hand and said, ‘This was freak accident. You didn’t do anything wrong. No one did anything wrong.’ And I just told him I loved him and to just concentrate on getting better.”

Trevor Stevens, Jacob Stevens’ brother, credits the youth group leader for saving his brother’s life. It is still not clear what happened during the accident. No additional information has been released at this time.
