Missouri Single-Vehicle Accident Leaves Georgia Driver Injured

WINSTON, MO. – October 31, 2018 (gallatinnorthmissourian.com) According to an online news report from gallatinnorthwestmissourian.com, a man from Georgia was involved in a vehicle accident October 29 in Missouri. He was injured in the crash.*

At approximately 8:15 p.m. on October 29, 24-year-old Walter Calhoun, of Decatur, Georgia, was traveling southbound on Interstate 35 in Daviess County, Missouri. At mile marker 61, about two miles west of Winston, Missouri, Calhoun exited from I-35 onto U.S. 69 and immediately crossed over both lanes of the highway. His vehicle then traveled off the west side of the highway and down an embankment, where it overturned and came to a rest on its roof. 

Calhoun was wearing a seat belt but was injured in the crash and transported to Cameron Regional Medical Center. His injuries were reportedly minor, and he is expected to make a full recovery. It is still not clear how the accident occurred or what caused Calhoun to run off the roadway. No other vehicles were involved. 

Authorities in Missouri are investigating the crash and have not yet reported additional information. 

According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 34,000 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States in 2016. These accidents resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States. 

Missouri’s 2016 fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were above the national ranges. The state’s individual data shows 15.5 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.25 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
