MILLS COUNTY, IA. – October 31, 2018 (kmaland.com) A man from Georgia was involved in a vehicle collision October 31 in Iowa, according to an online news report from kmaland.com. The driver of the other vehicle was injured in the crash.*

The crash occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Interstate 29 in Mills County, Iowa. According to a report from the Mills County Sheriff’s Office, 80-year-old Aubrey Brooks, of Kansas City, Missouri, was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-29 and collided with a southbound vehicle driven by 25-year-old Marcos Bautista-Ramirez, of Canton, Georgia.

Bautista-Ramirez noticed Brooks’s vehicle driving in the wrong lane, deputies said, and tried to swerve out of the way to avoid a crash. The front left side of his vehicle struck the front left side of hers. Brooks was transported to Jennie Edmunson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, with unknown injuries. Her current medical condition was not reported. Bautista-Ramirez was not injured in the crash.

Both vehicles were totaled. It is not yet clear why Brooks was driving in the wrong lanes of the interstate. The Mills County Sheriff’s Office is investigating and has not released additional information at this time.

Mills County, Iowa, is about 950 miles from Canton, Georgia. Canton is located in Cherokee County, Georgia, where, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, vehicle accidents are on the rise. Between 2012 and 2016, the number of crashes in the county more than doubled. The number of injuries from those accidents also nearly doubled. However, the number of fatality accidents seems to be trending down.

In 2012, 18 fatality vehicle accidents occurred in Cherokee County. That number lowered to 16 in 2013, then to 12 in both 2014 and 2015. By 2016, the number of fatality accidents was down to seven. Most fatal accidents in the county are related to speeding or alcohol or both.
