Head-On Crash Leaves One Person Dead in McDuffie County, Georgia

MCDUFFIE COUNTY, GA. – October 30, 2018 ( A two-vehicle crash left one person dead October 30 in McDuffie County, Georgia, according to an online news report from*

On October 30, a Kia Sorento was traveling south in the northbound lanes of Wrens Highway in McDuffie County. Near mile marker 1, the Kia collided head-on with a Chevrolet Silverado. 

A passenger in the Chevrolet, 64-year-old Carol Atkinson, was critically injured in the crash and transported to a local hospital, where she was tragically pronounced dead. It is not clear whether the driver of the Chevrolet, 66-year-old Johnny Atkinson, or the driver of the Kia, 21-year-old Cassandra Smith, were injured. 

Officials report that Smith has been charged with driving under the influence and first-degree vehicular homicide. The investigation of the crash is ongoing, and no additional information has been released at this time. 

McDuffie County is located near the eastern border of the state of Georgia and has an estimated population of 21,500. Its major roadways include I-20, U.S. Route 78, U.S. Route 221, and U.S. Route 278. 

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, a total of 757 vehicle crashes occurred in McDuffie County in 2016. These crashes resulted in injuries to 186 people and in the deaths of six people. The number of accidents in the county more than doubled during a five-year period between 2012 and 2016, though the fatality rate declined during this time. In 2012, 347 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 149 injuries and six deaths. 

Consistently, about half of the fatal vehicle accidents in McDuffie County involve speeding or alcohol consumption. From 2012 to 2016, one motorcyclist was killed in a vehicle collision.
