11-Year-Old Girl Dies From Effects of Hurricane Michael

November 03, 2018

SEMINOLE COUNTY, GA. – October 31, 2018 (walb.com) According to an online news report from walb.com, an 11-year-old girl in southwest Georgia died during the effects of Hurricane Michael.*

The girl was at her grandmother’s home in Seminole County, Georgia, when the storm hit the area, and the strong winds carried a mobile carport into the air. The carport came crashing down on the home and struck the young girl in the head. She died of massive blunt force trauma, according to the Seminole County Coroner’s Office.

The girl’s name has been released by local media but withheld from this story for privacy reasons. Because of the strength of the storm and destruction it caused, emergency crews were not able to reach the home to respond to the 911 call until the afternoon of October 11. She was pronounced dead at the residence.

Hurricane Michael made landfall October 10 as a Category 4 hurricane and was the most powerful storm to strike the Florida Panhandle. Michael downgraded to a tropical storm as it traveled into Georgia, but its rain and winds were still strong enough to cause flooding, property damage, downed power lines, and tragic loss of life.

The Georgia Department of Transportation worked quickly to clear debris from hundreds of blocked roadways to allow emergency crews to assist survivors and to make room for repair work to begin. Thousands of people lost power, which utility companies have been working intensely to restore. The full extent of damage to Georgia’s agriculture remains to be seen. Early reports indicated some crops and the poultry industry were hit particularly hard.
