Woman Struck, Killed by Vehicle in Maryland While Trying to Help Crash Victim
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD. – October 29, 2018 (wsbradio.com) A woman who stopped to help a car crash victim October 28 in Maryland was tragically struck and killed by another vehicle, according to an online news report from wsbradio.com.*
At approximately 4:10 a.m. on October 28, 23-year-old Jhonna Nicole Caballero, of Crofton, Maryland, came upon a car accident on a highway in Prince George’s County, Maryland. A silver Pontiac Grand Am had crashed into a barrier on the highway, and Caballero stopped at the scene to try to help. As Caballero was attempting to help the Pontiac driver, an Infiniti G37 struck her. Caballero died at the scene.
Police arrested the driver of the Infiniti, identified as a 37-year-old man from Springdale, Maryland, on suspicion of driving under the influence. It is not yet clear what caused the initial accident. Maryland authorities are investigating and have not released additional information at this time.
According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 34,000 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States in 2016. These accidents resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States.
On a state level, the fatality rates ranged from 4.0 per every 100,000 people in the District of Columbia to 23.1 per every 100,000 people in Mississippi. The rates also ranged from 0.66 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled in Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Rhode Island, to 1.88 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled in South Carolina.
Maryland’s 2016 fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were well below the national ranges. The state’s individual data shows 8.4 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 0.86 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
