Victims of Fatal Alabama Crash Identified; Two Georgians Among Deceased

SHELBY COUNTY, AL. – October 29, 2018 (shelbycountyreporter.com) According to an online news story from shelbycountyreporter.com, the victims of the October 27 fatal wreck in Shelby County, Alabama, have been identified. Two Georgians were among the deceased.*

The wreck occurred on Interstate 65 North. Near mile marker 240 in Shelby County, four vehicles collided. It is not yet clear what caused the accident. One of the vehicles caught on fire after impact. 

Three people in the vehicle that caught on fire died from their injuries. Janice Manning, 71, of Kentucky, and Debbie Decker, 58, of Georgia, died on the scene. Jacquelin Walters, 35, of Georgia, was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where she later died.  

No one else involved in the crash has been identified at this time. Alabama State Troopers are investigating the wreck and have not yet released additional information.

According to an article from the National Fire Protection Association, between 2003 and 2007, fire departments throughout the United States responded to almost 290,000 vehicle fires each year. These fires caused annual averages of 480 deaths, 1,525 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage. On average, 31 highway vehicle fires were reported every hour during this time period. 

Ninety-three percent of reported vehicle fires and 92 percent of vehicle fire fatalities involve highway vehicles, such as cars, trucks, buses, RVs, and motorcycles. Highway vehicle fires accounted for 17 percent of reported fires nationally from 2003 to 2007, 12 percent of fire deaths, 8 percent of civilian fire injuries, and 9 percent of property damage from reported fires.
