AL Police Pleading with Drivers to Slow Down After Triple-Fatality Crash on I-65

November 04, 2018

SHELBY COUNTY, AL. – October 29, 2018 (wbrc.com) Authorities in Alabama are pleading with drivers to slow down, after a major wreck claimed the lives of three people October 27 on Interstate 65 in Shelby County, Alabama. Two people from Georgia were among the victims.*

The wreck occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m. on October 27 on Interstate 65 North. Near mile marker 240 in Shelby County, four vehicles collided. It is not yet clear what caused the accident. One of the vehicles caught on fire after impact.

Three people in the vehicle that caught on fire died from their injuries. Janice Manning, 71, of Kentucky, and Debbie Decker, 58, of Georgia, died on the scene. Jacquelin Walters, 35, of Georgia, was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where she later died.  No one else involved in the crash has been identified at this time.

Alabama State Troopers are still investigating the wreck, and local police in Pelham, Alabama, are trying to impress upon drivers how devastating these accidents can be for families, friends, and emergency responders.

“It keeps running through my mind, the pictures of what those cars looked like, trying to piece together how did that happen,” said Office Todd McCann with the Pelham Police Department. “It was just total chaos there on the scene.”

McCann and law enforcement officers across the state want drivers to use more caution and think about the consequences of distracted and reckless driving.

“Slow down,” McCann said. “Leave a big gap between [you and] the car in front of you when you are driving, and stay off your phones.”
