Truck Hits Four Children Boarding School Bus in Indiana; Three Children Killed

October 31, 2018

ROCHESTER, IN. – October 30, 2018 (fox5atlanta.com) A pickup truck struck four children who were trying to board a school bus October 30 in Rochester, Indiana, according to an online news report from fox5atlanta.com. Three of the children were tragically killed, and one was seriously injured.*

At approximately 7 a.m. on October 30, a Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. bus was stopped with its stop-arm lowered on a road near Rochester. Four children were crossing the road to board the bus and were walking through the southbound lane, when a northbound pickup truck slammed into them.

Three of the children, a 9-year-old girl and her 6-year-old twin brothers, died at the scene. The fourth child, an 11-year-old boy, sustained multiple broken bones and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. The four children, whose names have not been released, were all Tippecanoe Valley students who were walking to the bus from the rural mobile home community where they lived. The 11-year-old boy is not related to the three siblings, according to officials.

The driver of the pickup truck, who has not been identified, stayed at the scene and spoke to police. Police have not yet said whether she will face charges, though the children had the right-of-way on the road. Indiana law requires all motorists to stop for school buses that are picking up or dropping off students. The circumstances of the incident suggest the pickup driver attempted to pass the stopped bus.

“It’s an unspeakable tragedy,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Tony Slocum. “We all have a responsibility to share the roadway, and we’re all responsible for making sure our children get to and from school safely.”
