Pedestrian Killed by Pickup Truck in British Columbia

October 31, 2018

DELTA, BRITISH COLUMBIA – October 25, 2018 (straight.com) A pedestrian was struck and killed by a pickup truck October 23 in Delta, British Columbia, according to an online news story from straight.com.*

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on October 23, a Dodge Ram pickup truck was turning north out of a parking lot in the 9000 block of 120th Street in Delta. As the truck was turning, the driver struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian, identified as a 44-year-old male from Surrey, British Columbia, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The driver of the Dodge, who has not been identified, remained at the scene and is reportedly cooperating with police. The Delta Police Department said it could not provide a cause for the collision at this time and said the investigation is ongoing. A spokesperson for the department reminded drivers and pedestrians to use extra caution this time of year, with weather and lighting conditions changing.

According to an article from NPR, pedestrian fatalities in the United States are a significant problem. In 2017, nearly 6,000 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in the U.S., a number that represents a 25-year high for the second year in a row. Pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. Two possible explanations for the year-over-year increases are more vehicles on the road due to lower gas prices and high instances of distracted driving.

And while the Governor’s Highway Safety Association says increases in pedestrian fatalities appear to be slowing, too many people are dying in these types of accidents every year. Pedestrian fatalities rose in 2017 in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Five states — California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Arizona — carried 30 percent of the U.S. population in 2017 but made up 43 percent of the pedestrian deaths that year.
