Head-On Collision in Montana Kills Two People, Injures Child

FROMBERG, MT. – October 25, 2018 (ccenterdispatch.com) According to an online news report from ccenterdispatch.com, two people were killed and a child was injured October 25 in a head-on collision in Fromberg, Montana.

The collision occurred just before 8 a.m. on October 25 on State Highway 310, near Fromberg, Carbon County, Montana. A red pickup traveling northbound crossed the center line of the highway and struck a southbound white pickup head-on. Two people died in the collision, and a child was reportedly taken to St. Vincent Healthcare with injuries. Reports indicate the child sustained broken bones. 

It is not yet clear what caused the red truck to cross the center line. Authorities are still investigating the crash and have not released additional information at this time. None of the victims has been identified. 

According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 34,000 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States in 2016. These accidents resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States. 

On a state level, the fatality rates ranged from 4.0 per every 100,000 people in the District of Columbia to 23.1 per every 100,000 people in Mississippi. The rates also ranged from 0.66 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled in Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Rhode Island, to 1.88 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled in South Carolina. 

Montana’s 2016 fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were well above the national ranges. The state’s individual data shows 18.2 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.44 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
