Wrong-Way Head-On Crash on I-75 Expressway in Henry County, GA, Injures 3

October 31, 2018

HENRY COUNTY, GA. – October 26, 2018 (ajc.com) A wrong-way head-on vehicle crash on the Interstate 75 expressway in Henry County, Georgia, injured three people, according to an online news report from ajc.com. The driver who caused the collision smashed through nine barriers the morning of October 26 before entering oncoming traffic.*

At approximately 6:15 a.m. on October 26, the driver of a small sedan attempted to drive southbound through the I-75 expressway in Henry County, Georgia. The reversible expressway toll system was flowing northbound for the morning commute, and the driver of the sedan crashed through eight warning stop arms and one metal barrier gate before crossing into oncoming traffic. The sedan struck a second vehicle head-on, then was hit from behind by a third vehicle.

The drivers of all three vehicle, none of whom has been identified, were taken to area hospitals for treatment of unknown injuries. Officials said early investigation suggests the driver of the sedan might have been driving under the influence, but that has not been confirmed. The investigation is ongoing.

The crash resulted in extreme delays to traffic in the area. The scene blocked all of the I-75 express lanes and one left lane on both sides of I-75 at the Interstate 675 interchange. Delays stretched back to Bill Gardner Parkway in Locust Grove, Georgia. At approximately noon that day, almost six hours later, northbound traffic was able to resume, but crews were still trying to repair the damaged gates.

Head-on vehicle collisions represent a small number of the accidents that occur every year in the United States, but they account for a larger percentage of traffic deaths in the country. About 2 percent of all the accidents in the U.S. involve head-on collisions, but these types of accidents cause approximately 10 percent of the nation’s crash-related deaths.
