Two Children Struck By Car in Moultrie, Georgia, While Walking to School Bus

November 04, 2018

MOULTRIE, GA. – October 25, 2018 (moultrieobserver.com) Two children were struck by a car and seriously injured October 25 in Moultrie, Georgia, as they were walking to a stopped school bus. The story is reported online at moultrieobserver.com.*

Shortly before 7 a.m. on October 25, a Colquitt County school bus was stopped on Thigpin Trail in Moultrie with its stop arm extended, waiting for students to board. Two children were walking across the road to board the bus, and a car attempted to pass the bus, striking both children. Both children were airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Their current medical conditions are not known.

Colquitt County School Superintended Doug Howell confirmed both children were students at Hamilton Elementary School but did not release the names of the children. Howell said it appeared the driver of the car ignored the bus’s stop arm.

The driver of the car has not been identified, but it is likely he or she will face criminal charges in connection with the crash. Authorities are investigating and have not released additional information at this time.

The Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety compiled crash data for Colquitt County during the years 2012 through 2016 and found surprising jumps in the number of annual vehicle accidents during this time. In 2012, 191 vehicle accidents occurred in Colquitt County. The following year, the total number of accidents jumped to 920.

However, during the next year, in 2014, 749 vehicle accidents occurred in the county. Accident numbers then stay about the same leading to 2016. From 2012 to 2016, vehicle accidents resulted on average in about 187 injuries and about 10 fatalities.
