Multi-Vehicle Crash in Atlanta Sends Dump Truck Flying Over Retaining Wall

October 29, 2018

ATLANTA, GA. – October 24, 2018 (ajc.com) A multi-vehicle crash October 24 in northwest Atlanta, Georgia, sent a dump truck flying over a retaining wall, according to an online news report from ajc.com.*

The accident occurred in the morning on October 24 at the intersection of West Marietta Street and Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard in Atlanta and involved seven or eight vehicles, including the dump truck. Authorities are not yet sure of the cause and order of events, but it appears the dump truck became involved when the driver tried to avoid an existing crash. The dump truck driver swerved off the road, drove through a parking lot, and struck two vehicles. The truck then flew over a 6-foot retaining wall and smashed into a tree.

After hitting the tree, the dump truck caught on fire. Firefighters were called to the scene and had to bring in a second fire truck carrying water because the wrecked dump truck was blocking a hydrant. A second vehicle at the scene also caught fire. One of the drivers involved, Katreina Thomas, said the dump truck landed partially on her Lexus sedan.

“It was a big boom, and then you saw the truck flying through the air, and it landed on my car,” Thomas said. “I unfastened by seat belt and just took off running.”

Thomas said she looked back to see the truck leaking diesel fuel and a fire breaking out. Remarkably, no one was seriously injured in the crash. The dump truck driver, who has not been identified, was able to exit the vehicle before it became completely engulfed in flames.

“We are glad that everyone is ok with some minor injuries, with all the damage that was caused here this morning,” said Sgt. Cortez Stafford with the Atlanta Fire Department.
