Utility Worker Dies in Alabama Industrial Accident

MONTGOMERY, AL. – October 23, 2018 ( A utility worker died October 21 after an industrial accident in Montgomery, Alabama, according to an online news story from Few details have been released about the accident at this time.*

A spokesperson for the Montgomery Department of Public Safety, Martha Earnhardt, said the accident occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on October 21 in the 2500 block of Jackson Ferry Road in Montgomery. First responders received a call about an unresponsive utility worker who had been working underground. 

The worker, identified as Pete McCord, sustained unknown injuries and was transported to Jackson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. McCord reportedly worked for Montgomery Water Works for 15 years before his death. A profile on LinkedIn says McCord was the maintenance supervisor at Montgomery Water Works and Sanitary Sewer Board. An obituary is not available, and funeral information has not been reported. 

“It is with a heavy heart we are sad to report we lost a very good water works employee,” said John Scanlan, safety director for Montgomery Water Works. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the McCord family.”

Scanlan was not able to comment further on what occurred the evening of October 21, saying he could not provide information about an ongoing investigation. Earnhardt was able to confirm that the incident had been reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and that OSHA would be conducting an investigation, calling the incident an “industrial accident.” No details have been reported at this time about the cause or nature of the accident.
