Driver Charged After Hitting, Killing Trucker on I-75 in Whitfield County, Georgia

WHITFIELD COUNTY, GA. – October 24, 2018 ( As reported online by, a woman from Missouri has been arrested and criminally charged after hitting and killing a truck driver who was standing outside his truck on Interstate 75 in Whitfield County, Georgia.* 

At approximately 8:20 a.m. on October 23, 51-year-old Denton Augustan Edmond, of Jacksonville, Florida, was diving a semi-truck on I-75 South in Whitfield County. One of the tires on his truck blew, and Edmond pulled into the emergency lane near mile marker 327 to inspect the vehicle. He had placed safety triangles around his truck and was standing outside it when a Nissan Altima veered into the emergency lane and struck Edmond. 

Edmond died at the scene. The driver of the Nissan, 42-year-old Ontaya Michelle Brooks, of St. Louis, Missouri, reportedly lost control of her vehicle for an unknown reason before the crash. The police report listed fatigue as a possible reason for the loss of control. Results of a blood analysis are pending. Brooks was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and failure to maintain a lane. Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident and has not released additional information at this time. 

Whitfield County is located on the northern border of the state of Georgia. According to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, vehicle accidents in Whitfield County have increased during the last several years. In 2012, a total of 1,342 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 480 injuries and 13 deaths. These numbers remained relatively steady through 2013 and 2014 but increased in 2015. 

In 2015, 1,701 accidents occurred in Whitfield County, causing 509 injuries and 17 deaths. The following year, accident numbers jumped significantly. The accident total in 2016 was 3,229. These accidents resulted in 861 injuries and 13 deaths.
