Escalator Incident Injures 20 People in Rome

October 29, 2018

ROME, ITALY – October 23, 2018 (macon.com) An estimated 20 people were injured October 23 when an escalator apparently malfunctioned and collapsed in Rome, Italy, according to an online news story from macon.com.*

Video from the incident shows an escalator at the Rome metropolitan station Piazza Rupubblica suddenly accelerate then collapse, causing people riding on it to pile on top of each other and crash to the ground. People on the parallel escalator were reportedly trying to pull others to safety.

“The scene that we found was people piled up at the bottom of the escalator,” said Giampietro Boscaino, Rome provincial fire chief. “People one on the top of the other looking for help. They had various injuries caused by the escalator that was twisted, therefore serious injuries.”

The number of injured victims has been estimated at 20, most of whom were reportedly people visiting Rome from Russia for the Champion’s League soccer game between CSKA Moscow and Roma. Seven of the injured people are in serious condition, firefighters said. None of the victims has been identified.

It is not yet clear what caused the escalator to malfunction. Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi said witnesses at the scene reported that people were jumping and dancing on the escalator before the accident. City transportation officials said the escalators at the metro system were subject to monthly inspections and maintenance. Investigation is ongoing, and no additional information has been released at this time.

About 1,500 CSKA fans attended the soccer game in Rome. In an unrelated incident, a CSKA fan was stabbed with a knife in a reported altercation between opposing fans outside the Stadio Olimpico.
