ASU President Issues Statement After Freshman Killed in Drunk Driving Accident

October 25, 2018

LITHONIA, GA. – October 18, 2018 (montgomeryadvertiser.com) According to an online news report from montgomeryadvertiser.com, the Alabama State University President has issues a statement following the death of one of the university’s freshman. The student was killed October 13 in a drunk driving accident in Georgia.*

On October 13, 18-year-old Kennedy Segars was sitting in her vehicle at a stoplight at the intersection of Klondike Road and Mall Parkway in Lithonia, Georgia. Another vehicle rear-ended Segars traveling more than 70 mph. Segars’s car flipped several times and traveled down an embankment. Segars was transported to a local hospital with a brain injury, and she tragically died two days later.

The driver of the vehicle that rear-ended her, 52-year-old Reginald Stubbs, survived the crash and was placed under arrest. He has now been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, following too closely, and driving under the influence. He is being held in the DeKalb County Jail without bond.

Segars was studying to be a lawyer, her family said, and was back in Georgia for her mother’s birthday. ASU President Quinton Ross issued the following statement after Segars’s death:

“The ASU family extends our deepest condolences and prayers to Kennedy Segars’ family and friends during this difficult time. Ms. Segars was a proud member of the University’s 2018-19 freshman class, the first group of freshmen to enroll in ASU since I became president. Her presence will be sorely missed by her classmates, friends and professors.”

ASU has offered counseling services to students affected by Segars’s death and plans to hold a memorial service in Segars’s honor.
