Three DeKalb County Officers Injured in Police Chase

October 25, 2018

DEKALB COUNTY, GA. – October 18, 2018 (ajc.com) According to an online news report from ajc.com, three officers in DeKalb County, Georgia, were injured during a police chase October 17 that started in Lake City, Georgia.*

On October 17, an officer with the Lake City Police Department attempted to pull over a driver in a traffic stop in Clayton County, Georgia. The driver, who has not been identified, fled the scene on foot and attempted to carjack another vehicle but failed. He then ran into an Auto Auction nearby and stole an SUV with a tow dolly. He drove back toward the Lake City officer’s location and struck the officer, running over the officer’s leg and continuing on Bouldercrest Road toward DeKalb County.

A chase ensued involving police and the Clayton County Sheriff’s office. The chase continued through the intersection of Panthersville Road and Flat Shoals Road, where several cars were struck and damaged. A Clayton County Sheriff’s deputy involved in the chase then crashed into two DeKalb County Police patrol vehicles, injuring both officers inside the vehicles.

The chase ended when the tow dolly became tangled in the SUV, and the suspect crashed. He was taken into custody by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, and charges are pending.

The Lake City officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of his leg injury. He is expected to fully recover. The two DeKalb County officers sustained minor injuries, including soreness, but declined treatment. It does not appear the Clayton County deputy involved in the crash was injured. None of the officers has been identified.
