Additional Information Released on Gwinnett County Box Truck Crash in Georgia

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA. – October 16, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, additional information has been released regarding an October 16 box truck accident on Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County, Georgia.*

The accident occurred at approximately 10 a.m. on October 16 near the Jimmy Carter Boulevard exit on I-85 South. A black Chevrolet Silverado veered into the Peach Pass lane on the interstate and was sideswiped by a Liberty Tire Recycling box truck. Upon impact, the box truck lost control and hit multiple other vehicles before overturning. 

Police responding to the scene shut down five of the seven interstate lanes to allow crews to clear the wreckage. Two people were reportedly transported to local hospitals for treatment of unknown injuries. They have not been identified. 

It is not yet clear why the driver of the Silverado traveled into the Peach Pass lane. The Silverado driver, who has also not been identified, was arrested and charged with driving without a license and failure to maintain a lane. No additional information has been released at this time.

According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 34,000 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States in 2016. These accidents resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States. 

Georgia’s 2016 fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were close to the top of the national ranges. The state’s individual data shows 15.1 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.29 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
