Macon Authorities Investigating Pedestrian Fatality Occurring on October 14, 2018

MACON, GA. – October 14, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, authorities in Macon, Georgia, are investigating a pedestrian fatality that occurred October 14.*

Just after 10 p.m. on October 14, 70-year-old Gary Alden Runkles was walking on Liberty Church Road in Macon, Georgia. At the intersection of Liberty Church Road and Hawkinsville Road, a 2015 Scion struck Runkles. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said the Scion was traveling northbound on Hawkinsville Road, and Runkles was lying the road before the collision. 

The driver of the Scion, David Alvord, stayed at the scene. Deputies said he did not see Runkles lying in the road until it was too late. Runkles was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bibb County Coroner. An autopsy will be performed to determine whether he was struck by multiple vehicles

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the collision and has not released additional information at this time. Anyone with potential information about the incident is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office at (478) 751-7500. 

Traffic accidents in Bibb County have seen a dramatic increase in the last several years, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In 2012, a total of 858 accidents occurred in the county, leading to 220 injuries and 17 fatalities, including three fatal pedestrian accidents. 

After 2013, vehicle accidents in Bibb County skyrocketed. In 2014, 2,547 accidents happened in the county, leading to 689 injuries and 23 deaths, including eight pedestrian deaths. By 2016, a total of 7,617 accidents occurred in the county, which resulted in injuries to 2,144 people and in the deaths of 28 people. Eight of the people killed in Bibb County traffic accidents in 2016 were pedestrians.
