Two Weeks After Cobb County Cattle Wreck, Last Cow Rounded Up
SANDY SPRINGS, GA. – October 15, 2018 (rochesterfirst.com) Two weeks after a crash that killed 11 cows on Interstate 285 in Cobb County, Georgia, the last cow has been rounded up. The story is reported online at rochesterfirst.com.*
A truck carrying almost 90 cows overturned the morning of October 1 as it was exiting Interstate 285 East onto Interstate 75 North. It is still not clear what exactly caused the truck to overturn. The driver of the cattle trailer, who has not been identified, was injured and transported to a nearby hospital. The driver of another vehicle was also injured after hitting one of the loose cows on the interstate.
Eleven of the cows died in the crash. Many of the cows escaped the trailer after the crash and wandered onto and around the interstate. Sandy Springs Police worked with Cobb County Police to round up the loose cattle, which were then transported to a facility in Calhoun, Georgia. By the afternoon, 87 cows had been accounted for, and two were still missing.
On October 15, only one cow remained missing, and it was spotted standing in some woods in the Atlanta metro area. The cow was safely captured that afternoon, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The October 1 incident represents the third report this year of loose cattle on Georgia interstates. In May, another 10 cows died when a tractor-trailer crashed on I-75 South near Kennesaw. The driver of that tractor-trailer drifted off the roadway then overcorrected, causing the truck to strike an attenuation barrier. About a month later, three cows were killed when a tractor-trailer overturned while entering Interstate 20 from I-285 in DeKalb County, Georgia.
