Lawmakers: Georgia’s Hands-Free Law Already Producing Positive Results

October 31, 2018

GEORGIA – October 15, 2018 ( According to an online news story from, Georgia lawmakers say the state’s Hands-Free law, which went into effect in July, has already produced positive results.*

Representative John Carson (R-Marietta) announced earlier this month that traffic fatalities, crashes, and insurance claims had declined in the state of Georgia.

“I am very pleased to see that Georgia drivers are incurring fewer crashes and fatalities,” Carson said. “The Hands-Free Georgia Act was all about saving lives, and I believe that’s exactly what it is doing. I sincerely hope these life-saving trends continue for the benefit and safety of all Georgians and their families.”

As of September 30, traffic fatalities were down by 128 from 2017. The number of crashes overall was down 11 percent for the year, which represents the largest decrease in traffic accidents in Georgia in a decade. Georgia State Patrol shows that traffic crashes went down in the state right after implementation of the Hands-Free law at the beginning of July. Crashes declined by 2.5 percent in July and by 8.9 percent in August, compared with the same months in 2017.

Rep. Jeff Jones (R-Brunswick) said he voted for the Hands-Free Georgia Act and defended the law against arguments that it is not broad enough.

“Opponents of the new law argue that all distracted driving, such as eating, grooming, and other distractions should be included in this new law,” Jones said. “The reality is that the percentage of traffic accidents caused by these other distractions are statistically insignificant compared to the accidents caused by cell phone use. Whether we agree with the new law or not, I know we all hope and pray that these positive trends continue.”
