Box Truck Accident Closes I-85 in Gwinnett County, Georgia
GWINNETT COUNTY, GA. – October 16, 2018 (gwinnettdailypost.com) According to an online news report from gwinnettdailypost.com, a box truck accident October 16 shut down part of Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County, Georgia.*
The accident occurred in the morning on October 16 near the Jimmy Carter Boulevard exit on I-85 South. Five passenger cars and a box truck from Liberty Tire Recycling were involved in the wreck. It is not clear how the crash happened or how many people were involved. No injury report was provided.
The Georgia Department of Transportation shut down three of the six lanes to allow crews to clear the wreckage. All lanes were reopened shortly before 12:30 p.m. No additional information has been released at this time.
Gwinnett County is located in the north-central portion of the state of Georgia. The county has an estimated population of more than 920,000, and its major roadways include Interstate 85, Interstate 985, U.S. Route 23, U.S. Route 29, and U.S. Route 78.
According to data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, numerous vehicle accidents occur in Gwinnett Countyevery year. In 2012, nearly 29,000 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, resulting in injuries to 6,418 people and the deaths of 45 people. Accident figures rose steadily during the next four years. In 2016, a total of 41,527 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 9,436 injuries and 61 deaths.
The highest number of vehicle fatalities from 2012 to 2016 occurred in 2015, when 67 people died in motor vehicle accidents. Almost half of those fatality accidents involved alcohol or excessive speeding. Fourteen of the people killed were pedestrians, and one was a bicyclist.
