SUV Hits, Kills Pedestrian in Anchorage, Alaska

October 21, 2018

ANCHORAGE, AK. – October 17, 2018 (seattletimes.com) A man crossing a street in Alaska October 16 was struck and killed by an SUV, according to an online news report from seattletimes.com.*

The accident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on October 16 in Anchorage, Alaska. The man, who has not been identified, was walking across C Street between Tudor Road and International Airport Road and reportedly stepped into oncoming traffic. A northbound SUV struck him, and emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV has also not been identified. Reports indicate the man was not inside a crosswalk at the time, but it is not clear whether a crosswalk was available in the area. Anchorage Police are investigating and are asking any witnessed to contact the department with information.

According to an article from NPR, the United States has a high number of pedestrian deaths every year. In 2017, nearly 6,000 pedestrians died in traffic accidents in the U.S., a number that represents a 25-year high for the second year in a row. Pedestrian deaths increased by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016. Two possible explanations for the year-over-year increases are more vehicles on the road due to lower gas prices and high instances of distracted driving.

And while the Governor’s Highway Safety Association says increases in pedestrian fatalities appear to be slowing, too many people are dying in these types of accidents every year. Pedestrian fatalities rose in 2017 in 23 states and the District of Columbia. Five states — California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Arizona — carried 30 percent of the U.S. population in 2017 but made up 43 percent of the pedestrian deaths that year.
