Georgia DOT Worker Hospitalized After Accident in Columbia County

October 19, 2018

COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA. – October 17, 2018 (wrdw.com) A worker with the Georgia Department of Transportation was injured October 17 while working in a Columbia County construction zone, according to an online news report from wrdw.com.*

The accident reportedly occurred on Washington Road in Columbia County. The worker, who has not been identified, was performing overnight work in the area and was transported to a local hospital after the accident. It is not clear how the accident occurred, and no additional details have been released at this time.

In 2017, more than 20,000 vehicle accidents occurred in work zones across Georgia, and 55 people died in those accidents. Every year, the state of Georgia participates in National Work Zone Awareness Week, which was April 9 through April 13 in 2018.

The Georgia State Transportation Board says many of these crashes occur because drivers do not want to slow down. They do not obey the posted construction speed limits and underestimate the difficulties in navigating through several construction zones. A lot of drivers also don’t understand that safety in work zones means protection for workers and also for the drivers and their passengers.

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, 78 percent of the people who die in work zone crashes are the driver or passenger of the car involved. Obeying work zone rules means keeping everyone safe. The law requires drivers to slow down and use caution, even if work is not currently taking place. The Georgia DOT is hoping awareness will lead to changed behavior and saved lives.
