Traffic Slowed in Columbia County After I-20 Wreck

COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA. – October 17, 2018 ( According to an online news story from, traffic was slowed in Columbia County, Georgia, the morning of October 17 due to a wreck on Interstate 20.*

The accident occurred around 8 a.m. on October 17 at mile marker 190 on I-20. It is not clear how many vehicles or people were involved. The Georgia Department of Transportation said two vehicles were towed from the scene. There is no report yet on the cause of the wreck or whether anyone was injured. The area was cleared about 30 minutes after the crash occurred. 

Columbia County is located on the eastern border of the state of Georgia and has an estimated population of 147,000. Interstate 20 is a major roadway running through the county, along with U.S. Route 78, U.S. Route 221, and U.S. Route 278. 

According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, Columbia County has seen a large jump in vehicle accidents during the last several years. In 2012, 373 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 63 injuries and eight fatalities. These numbers remained relatively steady during the next three years: 336 accidents in 2013 with 47 injuries and 10 fatalities; 379 accidents in 2014 with 50 injuries and seven fatalities; and 353 accidents in 2015 with 49 injuries and 15 fatalities. 

However, in 2016, the number of vehicle accidents in Columbia County skyrocketed to 4,051. From these accidents, 972 people were injured, and 17 people died. More than half of the fatal accidents that year were related to alcohol or speeding.
