Officials in Rome, GA, Considering Ban on Pedestrians, Cyclists on Bypass

October 16, 2018

ROME, GA. – October 14, 2018 (northwestgeorgianews.com) Officials in Rome, Georgia, are considering a ban on pedestrians and bicyclists along the Veterans Memorial Highway bypass in the city, according to an online new story from northwestgeorgianews.com.*

The Veterans Memorial Highway bypass is a state route, but city officials can request a prohibition on pedestrians and bicyclists from the Georgia Department of Transportation. The reason for the potential ban is safety. People walk and bike along the route every day during rush hour periods, and they are vulnerable to hit by car pedestrian accidents

“It’s really not safe to ride on roads with speed limits of 50 mph,” said Kirk Milam, Rome Public Services Manager.

Recently, two bicyclists were struck by a vehicle on the bypass. The cyclists were riding together, and the car grazed one and sideswiped the other. This is an example of an accident Rome officials see too often, and they are eager to find a way to protect people. But they are approaching the ban cautiously because they do not want the city to become an unfriendly place for walkers and bikers.

“We’re trying to encourage cycling in the community, and I’m hesitant to send a message saying, ‘You’re not welcome here,’” said City Commissioner Wendy Davis. Davis is a member of the committee charged with vetting the proposal.

Along with the ban on pedestrians and bicyclists, Rome officials are also considering alternatives, like reworking the route so that it is safer for people to walk or bike along Veterans Memorial Highway. Rome will be reviewing all options and examining data before making any decisions.
