Georgia Amusement Park Company Ordered to Mediation in Tennessee Lawsuit

October 17, 2018

GREENE COUNTY, TN. – October 12, 2018 ( According to an online news story from, a Georgia amusement park company has been ordered to mediation in a Tennessee federal lawsuit that stems from a 2016 Ferris wheel incident.*

On August 8, 2016, a Ferris wheel gondola malfunctioned at the Greene County Fair in Greene County, Tennessee. The aluminum skid plate of the gondola caught a cross brace on the Ferris wheel while the ride was in motion, causing the gondola to upend and collide with another gondola. Three young girls inside the malfunctioning gondola were ejected and fell to the ground below. They suffered serious bodily injuries, including broken bones and internal injuries. One of the girls suffered a traumatic brain injury.

The girls’ two families filed lawsuits in Tennessee federal court following the accident. In addition, the occupants of the second gondola (a woman and her 5-year-old granddaughter) also filed a lawsuit, making three lawsuits in total involving the same incident. The lawsuits, naming Family Attractions Amusement of Georgia, among others, were consolidated into one in the U.S. District Court in Greeneville, Tennessee.

On August 30, the parties to the lawsuit participated in a conference call status hearing with U.S. Magistrate Judge Cliff Corker, during which they agreed sufficient information had been discovered to engage in mediation. Judge Corker therefore ordered the case to mediation, which is to be completed by the end of October. The mediation process could possibly result in a settlement between the defendants and the families, or the cases could proceed to trial.
