OSCEOLA COUNTY, FL. – October 14, 2018 ( A Georgia man was involved in a vehicle accident October 13 on the Florida Turnpike that killed an occupant of another vehicle. The story is reported online at*

At approximately 9:30 p.m. on October 13, Wilfredo Colon Fontanez (age and city not reported) was traveling north on the Florida Turnpike in Osceola County, Florida. Just south of State Road 60, he lost control of his vehicle, traveled off the road and into the right shoulder, and struck a guardrail.

Patricia Tinoco Toribio, 27, of Winter Haven, Florida, passed by the scene and stopped in the center median to check on Fontanez. Three people were traveling in Toribio’s vehicle, including Jose Zuenigia-Garcia, 30, of Winter Haven, Tamari Olmeda Lopez, 44, of Altamonte Springs, Florida, and a 13-year-old juvenile (name withheld from this article for privacy reasons).

A northbound Mercedes approached Fontanez’s vehicle and attempted to swerve to avoid it. The Mercedes driver, Gabriel Nieves, 22, of Orlando, Florida, then ran off the road and drove into the center median, striking Zuenigia-Garcia, Lopez, and the juvenile. A fourth vehicle, driven by 21-year-old Michael Groth, of Powder Springs, Georgia, then also drove upon the scene and attempted to avoid a collision but struck Fontanez’s vehicle, which spun and hit Toribio’s vehicle.

Zuenigia-Garcia died from his injuries. It is not clear whether anyone else was injured in the crash. The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, and they reported everyone was wearing seat belts.
