Toyota Recalling 188,000 Vehicles for Airbag Inflation Issues

October 18, 2018

DETROIT, MI. – October 12, 2018 (macon.com) According to an online news report from macon.com, carmaker Toyota is recalling almost 188,000 cars, trucks, and SUVs for issues related to airbag inflation.*

The recall covers about 185,000 vehicles in North America and 2,600 vehicles in other markets. It includes the following vehicle models worldwide:

  • 2018 – 2019 Toyota Tundra pickup trucks
  • 2018 – 2019 Toyota Sequoia SUVs
  • 2019 Toyota Avalon sedans

Toyota says the recall is related to the airbag computer erroneously detecting a fault when the vehicles are started. With a fault, the airbags might not deploy in a crash. Toyota did not report whether any injuries have been associated with the problem.

Toyota will begin notifying affected owners, who can take their vehicles to local dealerships for repairs to the airbag control software. The recall is expected to begin October 22.

This is the second recall for Toyota this month. Earlier in October, the company announced a recall of Toyota Prius and Toyota Auris hybrids manufactured from October 2008 to November 2014. These hybrid vehicles might spontaneously enter a “failsafe” driving mode, which will cause them to lose power and stall. In the failsafe mode, power steering and braking still work, but the vehicle can stall out at high rates of speed, increasing the risk for a crash.

To check whether your vehicle is subject to an active recall right now, you can visit the website for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. By entering your VIN in the website, you will receive information about current recalls and how to proceed to ensure your vehicle’s safety.
