Candler Street in Decatur Still Presents Safety Concerns

October 20, 2018

DECATUR, GA- The reports that about one and a half miles of Candler Road have presented problems for years. Between College Avenue and Pharr Road, Candler has a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour. There are two hills located in that stretch of road which cause vehicles to pick up significant speed while driving through an area that is residential.*

Four recent incidents in the area, including a car accident that killed a five-year-old boy, and a hit-and-run crash, have brought attention to the street, which has long been considered a dangerous place for drivers.

The group Calm Candler recently attended a city commission meeting and spoke about the need for safety measure on the street. Last year, several safety measures were implemented including a pedestrian hybrid beacon and an improved crosswalk. A study indicated that only 15 percent of drivers travel above 38 miles per hour on the street. However, many in people in the area want the speed limit reduced.

The street is owned by the State of Georgia. Any decision to change the speed limit needs to be approved by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).

According to GDOT, 1550 people died on the state’s roadways in 2017. Georgia pledged its support for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official’s goal of reducing the annual number of people killed in the United States each year by 1,000. Georgia’s state-wide goal was to lower the number of people killed by at least 41 every year. Last year, the state saw only a minor reduction and failed to meet its stated goal.
