Man Killed When Car Strikes Gas Station in Atlanta, Georgia

October 20, 2018

ATLANTA, GA- According to, a vehicle struck a gas station in Atlanta killing the driver. The crash was captured on a surveillance camera which shows the vehicle driving around a corner striking the gas pumps and losing its tire. The vehicle then struck the Exxon gas station’s storefront.*

The driver of the vehicle was a 55-year-old man who suffered a medical emergency while driving leading to a loss of control of the vehicle. He died at the scene of the crash.

A woman who was at the station was also injured in the collision. The video footage shows someone walkpast the window of the shop just prior to the car smashing through the wall.

The prospect of experiencing a medical emergency behind the wheel is frightening. When a driver loses their ability to function, the results can be fatal, and not just for the driver. Medical emergencies only contribute to a very small amount of car accidents every year. Only around 1.3 percent of car accidents across the United States are the result of medical emergencies. Completely avoidable driving behaviors, such as driving under the influence and distracted driving, account for far more accidents than medical conditions.

When medical conditions do factor in, the conditions that are most likely to lead to accidents include blackouts, diabetic reactions, andseizures. Most of these collisions are single-vehicle collisions, and drivers who are involved in medical condition-caused crashes are more likely to killed or severely injured in these crashes. In around 69 percent of these crashes, the drivers left the roadway before crashes, as compared to only 17 percent of other collisions.
