Two Georgians Injured in California Vehicle Accident

SACRAMENTO, CA. – October 9, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a vehicle collision October 9 on Interstate 80 in California injured two Georgians.*

At approximately 10:15 a.m., 36-year-old Amanda Kennedy, of Savannah, Georgia, was driving a Freightliner in the middle lane of I-80 East in Sacramento, California. Near Mace Boulevard, Kennedy drifted into the right lane and struck an eastbound Volkswagen. The Freightliner overturned after impact and came to a rest on its side in the right shoulder. 

Kennedy and a passenger in the Freightliner with her, 45-year-old Joe Kennedy, of Savannah, were transported to UC Davis Medical Center with minor injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen, 77-year-old John Redmond, was also transported to UC Davis Medical Center with minor injuries. 

The crash closed the interstate for several hours. A portion of the roadway remained closed at 4 p.m. that day, and the interstate was not expected to completely open until around 6 p.m. 

Preliminary reports indicate there is no evidence either driver was speeding, and there is no evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved in the collision. California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash and has not yet released additional information to the public. 

Savannah is located in Chatham County on the eastern border of the state of Georgia. Data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety shows the county sees a large number of traffic accidents each year, and its accident rate is rising rapidly. In 2012, a total of 5,659 traffic accidents occurred in Chatham County, resulting in 1,388 injuries and 20 deaths. These numbers rose dramatically over five years, jumping to 15,806 vehicle accidents in the county in 2016, resulting in 3,760 injuries and 43 deaths.
