Florida Man Dies in I-85 Collision in Banks County, Georgia

BANKS COUNTY, GA. – October 9, 2018 ( A Florida man died in a three-vehicle collision October 9 on Interstate 85 in Banks County, Georgia, according to an online news report from* 

The collision occurred October 9 near mile marker 153 on I-85 North in Banks County. Reports indicate 29-year-old Arthur Grigoryan, of Jacksonville, Florida, was driving a 2016 Toyota Tundra southbound on I-85 and crossed the centerline of the roadway. His Toyota struck a northbound tractor-trailer head-on, then crashed into a northbound 2017 Kia Forte. 

Girgoyan died of his injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer, 36-year-old Rocky Gosnell, of Clarkesville, Georgia, was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, Georgia, with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Kia, 59-year-old Bennie Austin, of Atlanta, Georgia, was also transported to St. Mary’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

The cause of the collision is still not clear. The accident closed down all northbound lanes of I-85 for an extended period of time while crews investigated and cleared the scene. Banks County authorities are continuing to investigate and have not yet released additional information. 

According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 34,000 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States in 2016. These accidents resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States. 

Georgia’s 2016 fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were closer to the top of the national ranges. The state’s individual data shows 15.1 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.29 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
