Motorcyclist Killed in Athens and Clarke County, Georgia Accident

ATHENS-CLARKE COUNTY, GA. – October 9, 2018 (redandblack.com) According to an online news report from redandblack.com, a motorcyclist was killed October 8 in a vehicle crash in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia.* 

At approximately 6:30 p.m. on October 8, 27-year-old Douglas Nash, of Athens, Georgia, was riding a 2007 Suzuki motorcycle southbound on Barnett Shoals Road in Athens-Clarke County. At the intersection with Johnson Drive, an Acura MDX turned left onto Barnett Shoals Road and drove into the path of Nash’s motorcycle. The two vehicles collided near the center turning lane. 

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department reported that Nash died at the scene. The driver of the Acura has not been identified, and it is not clear whether he or she was injured. Police are continuing to investigate the crash and have not released additional information at this time. 

Athens-Clarke County was formed from a recent consolidation of Clarke County and the City of Athens. It is located in the north-eastern part of the state of Georgia and has an estimated population of approximately 125,000. 

In 2016, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, nearly 6,000 vehicle accidents occurred in Clarke County. These accidents led to 1,360 injuries and 13 fatalities. One of the fatal accidents that year involved a motorcyclist. 

Since 2007, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, more than 10 percent of all traffic fatalities in the state of Georgia involved motorcyclists. In 2016, approximately 173 motorcyclists died in motor vehicle accidents, which represented a 26 percent increase in motorcyclist fatalities since 2014.
