Driver Arrested After Hitting Bicyclist in Cobb County, Leaving Scene

October 15, 2018

COBB COUNTY, GA. – October 9, 2018 (wsbtv.com) After causing what appears to have been a road-rage collision with a bicyclist, a driver was arrested by authorities in Cobb County, Georgia. The story is reported online by wsbtv.com.*

The cyclist, Stewart Bryson (age and city not reported), had a GoPro camera attached to the front of his bike that recorded the incident. The driver of a pickup truck passed Bryson on a two-lane road while honking the truck’s horn, then came to a sudden stop, causing Bryson to crash into the back of the truck. Bryson fell off his bike and sustained a fractured neck in the collision. The pickup driver took off.

“I went unconscious, I don’t know for how long,” Bryson told reporters. “But later, I was just staring up at the blue sky. [The driver] chose to leave me on the pavement, and him not having any idea if I’m going to live or die.”

The GoPro footage captured the license plate of the truck, which police in Cobb County used to track down the driver, 69-year-old Phillip Harris, of Marietta, Georgia. Jail records show police arrested Harris about 30 minutes after the collision at his home in Marietta. Harris has been charged with misdemeanor offenses, including hit-and-run. Harris declined to provide any comment regarding the incident to reporters.

Bryson said he planned to visit a doctor to find out the full extent of his injuries and what his recovery process would look like. He has reportedly hired an attorney and will be pushing for stronger charges against Harris.

“I may make a full recovery,” Bryson said. “I’m not guaranteed of that.”
