Authorities Respond to Wreck on I-285 in Sandy Springs, GA

SANDY SPRINGS, GA. – October 10, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, authorities in Sandy Springs, Georgia, were responding to the scene of a vehicle wreck October 10 at Interstate 285 and Riverside Parkway.*

The wreck occurred during the morning rush hour, around 7 a.m., on October 10. It is not clear how many vehicles or people were involved, but a vehicle fire was reported. No information was reported about how the accident occurred or whether anyone was injured in the wreck. 

Traffic was heavily backed up on I-285 East, causing stops all the way back to South Cobb Drive. Reporters were urging drivers who were headed toward Interstate 75 from I-285 North to take I-75 into Atlanta, then use Interstate 85 or Ga. 400 to avoid the site of the collision and resulting traffic. The collision was eventually cleared to the right side of the interstate, but delays ensued throughout the area. 

Sandy Springs is located in Fulton County. In 2016, according to data from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, nearly 61,000 vehicle accidents occurred in Fulton County. These vehicle accidents led to 12,875 injuries and 129 deaths. Fatal accidents in 2016 involved 15 motorcyclists and 41 pedestrians. 

During the five-year period between 2012 and 2016, Fulton County had a major jump in vehicle collisions. In 2012, a total of 22,275 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, leading to 4,498 injuries and 77 deaths. By 2015, the number of accidents had grown well above 50,000, with fatality accidents reaching above 100. The fatal accidents that year involved 13 motorcyclists and 28 pedestrians.
