Decatur Residents Pushing for Improved Safety on South Candler Street

October 18, 2018

DECATUR, GA. – October 10, 2018 ( Residents in Decatur, Georgia, are pushing for improved safety on South Candler Street after the road became the site of a series of vehicle accidents, according to an online news story from*

Several vehicle accidents have happened on South Candler Street in only a few weeks, and residents of Decatur are fed up. People in the city organized a Facebook group called “Calm Candler” and held a rally October 3 to raise awareness about ongoing traffic issues on the street. The day of their rally, another vehicle accident occurred on South Candler Street.

At approximately 7:15 a.m. on October 3, a Chevrolet van traveling eastbound on East College Avenue ran a red light at the intersection with South Candler Street. The Chevy van collided with a Chevrolet pickup truck, and both vehicles sustained damage. Neither of the drivers was injured.

On October 1, a vehicle turned onto South Candler Street from a private drive and struck a southbound vehicle on the driver’s side, pushing the vehicle onto the curb. The driver of the first vehicle did not stop after the accident and continued south on South Candler Street.

On September 27, a woman who was allegedly driving under the influence rear-ended a vehicle at the intersection of South Candler Street and Midway Road. A 5-year-old boy who was riding in the vehicle the woman rear-ended was severely injured and later died of his injuries.

Two days earlier, on September 25, a car slammed into a postal truck in the 700 block of South Candler Street. The postal truck was stopped on the side of the road to deliver mail, and the impact of the collision sent the truck careening to the other side of the street and onto the sidewalk where children were walking.

The City of Decatur says it has taken numerous steps to try to improve safety on the street, but residents want additional action to protect people.
