Georgia Truck Driver Involved in Fatal Ohio Accident

PIKE COUNTY, OH. – October 10, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a truck driver from Georgia was involved in a vehicle accident October 9 in Ohio that resulted in the death of the other driver. Preliminary information indicates the Georgia driver caused the accident.*

At approximately 6 p.m. on October 9, 48-year-old Willie Wilson, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, was driving a 2006 Freightliner Cascadia out of a private drive in Pike County, Ohio. Wilson reportedly failed to yield and turned north onto U.S. Route 23 in front of a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. The Dodge was traveling southbound and struck Wilson’s semi-truck near mile marker 14. 

Wilson was not injured. The driver of the Dodge, 76-year-old Shannon Sparks, of Waverly, Ohio, died at the scene. Ohio State Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the collision and has not released additional information at this time. It is not clear whether Wilson will be cited or charged in connection with the crash. 

According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, more than 34,000 fatal vehicle crashes occurred in the United States in 2016. These accidents resulted in the deaths of more than 37,000 people. The fatalities averaged 11.6 per 100,000 people and 1.16 per every 100 million miles traveled in the United States. 

Ohio’s fatality rates, according to the IIHS data, were lower than the national ranges for the year 2016. The state’s individual data shows 9.7 deaths in 2016 per every 100,000 people and 1.11 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled.
