Event in Augusta Hopes to Draw Attention to Pedestrian and Motorcycle Safety

October 11, 2018

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Georgia roads have been deadly in 2018. According to Fox 54 News,The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety in Georgia stated that more than100 pedestrians and nearly 300 motorcyclists died in accidents in 2018. The number of dead and wounded, continue to rise each year. Some concerned citizens are making an effort to try and beat the problem. The event, called Active Alive Augusta, was held on the Augusta Common on October 7.*

The event planner, Tamara Wilkerson, needed to find some way to deal with the loss of her son in a motorcycle accident. Through her pain and sorrow, Active Alive was born. Ms. Wilkerson created the event to educate people on the hidden dangers out there on Georgia’s roads, especially concerning motorcycle riders, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

Ms. Wilkerson memorialized her son uniquely and creatively. She took her son’s name, Joshua-David Wade Ramirez, and turned it into an acronym just using his initials. Hence, JDWR, or “Just Drive with Resolve” became of the theme of the inaugural event. Ms. Wilkerson intended the phrase to catch people’s attention and remind them that motorists must always be attentive and present atthe moment when driving.

Another organizer, Caila Brown, shares that sentiment. Ms. Brown is a member of a group called “Georgia Bikes.” Ms. Brown told Fox 54 News that she receives a notification almost daily of another person who died in a crash in Georgia who was walking or riding. She also endeavors to convince drivers to honor the enormous responsibility one has when driving. Ms. Brown stated that too many people taking driving for granted and forget that they have tocontrol over a big, heavy machine that can alter the course of someone’s life in mere seconds if the driver is not cautious.
