Multi-Vehicle Collision on I-75 in Barlow County, Georgia

October 12, 2018

BARLOW COUNTY, Ga. — Four cars, a Recreational Vehicle and a vehicle towing a boat occurred in the Pleasant Valley section of Barlow County. The accident happened on I-75 in the northbound travel lanes. Georgia state troopers responded to the scene and closed the Interstate to allow workers to clear the area of the damaged vehicles and debris. reported that a medical helicopter arrived at the scene to transport the sole injured person to a local trauma center.*

The four-vehicle crash created a huge debris field. Police called in a craneto lift the RV out of the trees that line the road. The RV appeared to have become lodged in the trees. Additionally, a boat became stranded in the center of the Interstate after the car which was pulling the boat and trailer collided with other vehicles. Law enforcement was able to open the road to traffic eventually. However, vehicles moved slowly through the area after the northbound lanes opened up.

There are many causes related to RV crashes. Part of the difficulty driving RVs is the size of them. The size creates large blind spots along the sides, the immediate back, and the front of the vehicle. The size of an RV also creates a problem with maneuverability. They are hard to control and lack the ability of a smaller vehicle. Turning an RV is difficult because the RV must turn like a tractor trailer by swingingright or left depending on theturn. Additionally, the weight and height of the vehicle create a high center of gravity, making roll-overs a likely threat if the driver needs to take evasive action in an emergency situation.

Many people tow cars or other vehicles behind their RV. Inexperienced RV drivers will find driving difficult and dangerous. Traveling at excessive speeds only exacerbates the danger.
