Single-Vehicle Accident Causes Death of Woman in Newnan, Georgia

NEWNAN, GA. – October 5, 2018 (times-herald.com) According to an online news report from times-herald.com, a single-vehicle accident October 5 in Newnan, Georgia, resulted in the death of a 71-year-old woman.*

The crash reportedly occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. on October 5 on Tommy Lee Cook Road in Newnan. In the 1400 block of the roadway, the driver of a Honda Accord veered off the right side of the road and overcorrected, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The Honda traveled sideways and struck a tree on the driver’s side of the car. 

Georgia State Patrol says the driver, identified as a 71-year-old woman from Union City, Georgia, died instantly. A 14-year-old passenger in the car sustained minor injuries, including scrapes and bruises, and was transported to Piedmont Newnan Hospital for evaluation. Both the driver and passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time, and the airbags in the vehicle deployed. 

Georgia State Patrol is continuing to investigate and has not released additional information. It is not yet clear what caused the Honda driver to initially run off the road.  

Newnan is located in Coweta County in the western portion of the state of Georgia. The county is part of the Atlanta metro area and has an estimated population of 143,000. Its major roadways include Interstate 85, U.S. Route 27, and U.S. Route 29.

Vehicle accidents in Coweta County have risen in the last several years, according to data collected by the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In 2012, a total of 1,518 vehicle accidents occurred in the county, resulting in injuries to 444 people and 13 deaths. In 2016, the number of vehicle accidents in Coweta County had increased to 4,349. These accidents resulted in 1,118 injuries and 22 fatalities.
