Tablet Computer Might Have Caused Death of Child Involved in Spain Car Crash

October 09, 2018

VILANOVA DE AROUSA, SPAIN – October 5, 2018 ( An online article at discusses a car crash that occurred September 24 in Spain. The crash resulted in the death of a 3-year-old girl, and reports indicate the computer tablet she was holding might have been responsible for her death.*

On September 24, a 3-year-old girl was riding in the back of a car that collided with a school bus in Villanova de Arousa, Spain. The girl was strapped into an Isofix-anchored child safety seat and was holding a computer tablet. The impact of the collision caused the tablet to fly into her face, and though the official cause of death has not been determined, the tablet reportedly caused severe head injuries to the child.

“This is a tragic accident, which will send a shudder down the spine of every parent who lets their child use a tablet or smartphone as entertainment on any car journey,” said RAC road safety expert Pete Williams. “We have not heard of any similar incidents, but it is important to realize that in a high-speed accident, any hard object which is not strapped down inside the vehicle has the potential to become a lethal projectile.”

Parents often hand their children tablets or phones on car rides of any length to keep the children occupied during the trip. Children often hold the devices, but in light of this accident, parents should consider using products that allow the devices to be strapped to the back of the driver’s seat or front passenger’s seat or one of the headrests. While this creates a more passive experience for the child, it can reduce the risk of serious injury during a crash.
