Toyota Recalling 2.4 Million Vehicles for Issues with Stalling

October 09, 2018

TOKYO, JAPAN – October 5, 2018 (wsbradio.com) Automobile manufacturer Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling more than 2 million vehicles for issues with stalling, according to an online news report from wsbradio.com.*

The recall affects hybrid vehicles in Japan and the United States, as well as several other countries. Toyota says certain hybrid vehicles might spontaneously enter a “failsafe” driving mode, which will cause them to lose power and stall. In the failsafe mode, power steering and braking still work, but the vehicle can stall out at high rates of speed, increasing the risk for a crash

The recall applies to Toyota Prius and Toyota Auris hybrids manufactured from October 2008 to November 2014. Some of these vehicles were subject to an earlier recall, which did not fix the current problem. About 1.25 million vehicles are affected in Japan, 807,000 in the United States, 290,000 in Europe, and 3,000 in China.

Toyota says it has received three reports in Japan related to the stalling issue as of the end of September. The incidents did not involve vehicle accidents or injuries. The automaker would not comment on whether it had received reports outside of Japan.

Owners of affected vehicles will soon be notified and will be able to bring their vehicles to local dealerships for repairs at no cost. The repairs will include updating software in the vehicles.

To check whether your vehicle is subject to an active recall right now, you can visit the website for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. By entering your VIN in the website, you will receive information about current recalls and how to proceed to ensure your vehicle’s safety.
