Thomas County Police Chase Ends in Vehicle Collision; Suspect Still At Large

October 06, 2018

THOMAS COUNTY, GA. – October 3, 2018 ( According to an online news report from, a police chase October 1 in Thomas County, Georgia, ended with a vehicle collision and the suspect getting away.*

On the evening of October 1, two deputies with the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office were attempting to serve a warrant on Chatham Drive. They noticed a vehicle that was traveling toward them make a sudden illegal U-turn. One of the deputies followed the vehicle — a light-colored Mercury Grand Marquis — and tried to make a traffic stop. The driver, however, sped away.

Both deputies then pursued the vehicle. At the interception of Clay Street and Crawford Street, a white pickup truck struck the vehicle of the deputy leading the pursuit. The impact sent the deputy’s patrol vehicle crashing into a parked car in Crawford Street. The second deputy then stopped to assist at the wreck, and the suspect being pursued was able to continue on.

“Immediately his first reaction was to get out and check on everybody,” Thomas County Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Jones said of the second deputy. “Check on our deputy, check on the occupant of the other vehicle to make sure everybody was ok. So he let the guy go. Could have stayed in the pursuit, yeah, but his first job now was looking after people who may be injured.”

No one involved in the collision, including the two deputies, has been identified. No one was seriously injured.

The Thomas County Sheriff’s Office has released dash cam footage showing the Grand Marquis. Officials are asking anyone with information about the vehicle or the driver to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (229) 225-3300.
