Man Hospitalized After Coweta County Train Collision

October 06, 2018

COWETA COUNTY, GA. – October 4, 2018 ( A man was hospitalized October 3 after his car was struck by a train in Coweta County, Georgia, according to an online news story from*

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. on October 3, near the intersection of Wash Johnson Road and North Highway 29 in Coweta County. A man driving a Mercedes Benz attempted to cross over a set of train tracks, and a southbound train struck his vehicle. There are no crossing arms or lights on the tracks where the collision occurred.

The rain dragged pieces of the car down the tracks before coming to a stop around Herring Road. The gas tank of the car ignited on impact and exploded right after the driver exited the vehicle. Witnesses say the driver, who has not been identified, was able to walk over the tracks after the accident. The driver was then airlifted to an Atlanta hospital for treatment. His or her current medical condition is not known.

Coweta County first responders and firefighters responded to the scene, along with Georgia State Patrol. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames with foam. Officials are investigating the incident and have not released additional information at this time.

Reports estimate about 2,000 people in the United States are killed every year in incidents involving grade crossing or trespassing on railroad property. According to an article by USA Today, when a car or person is on a set of railroad tracks, railroad officials say little can be done aside from blaring a train’s horn. By the time a train is close enough to see someone on the tracks, the heavy locomotive cannot be stopped in time to avoid a collision.
