Georgia School District to Hold Vigil for Student Killed in Traffic Accident

October 05, 2018

SPALDING COUNTY, GA. – October 2, 2018 (ajc.com) The Griffin-Spalding County School District held a vigil October 3 for a high school student who was killed in a traffic accident September 28, according to an online news story from ajc.com.*

On September 28, Lanazia Mizell, a student at Griffin High School, was attempting to cross the street on North Expressway at Vineyard Road. A report from Georgia State Patrol says she was crossing on a green light, but it is not clear which street’s light was green. A Ford Explorer struck Mizell as she was crossing the road. Mizell was airlifted to a local hospital, where she died of her injuries. The driver, who was not identified, stayed at the scene. The driver will not be charged, according to Georgia State Patrol.

The Griffin-Spalding County School District planned a vigil for Mizell on the evening of October 3 at Wyonia Tyus Olympic Park. A spokesperson for Griffin-Spalding Schools, Kimberly Willis Green, said Griffin High School’s junior class president also led a moment of silence for Mizell during morning announcements. Another moment of silence was also planned during the school’s homecoming pep rally.

In a statement to reporters, Willis Green said, “The Griffin-Spalding County Schools sends sincere condolences to the family, friends and the Griffin High School community on the passing of student Lanazia Mizell.”

People close to Mizell have created a GoFundMe page to raise donations for the family. The page says the family has paid for the funeral but needs assistance with living necessities during this difficult time.
